Any Doubt Who Russia Supports?
by Big Dog on Mar 12, 2007 at 12:10 Uncategorized
Iran is developing nuclear technology and will begin enriching Uranium. There is no doubt in the minds of most that Iran will use this technology to develop nuclear weapons and that will spell disaster for the Middle East. Iran will then have the means to strike at and wipe out Israel, a stated goal of Iranian President Ahmadinejad. The United Nations addressed this issue and issued sanctions.
The sanctions were watered down and are being ignored by Iran. Russia, Iran’s friend, has been instrumental in insuring that the sanctions were not too bad. Russia has mad ensure that Iran will be able to continue to enrich Uranium because Russia ensured that the sanctions lacked the teeth to make a difference. Russia is helping Iran in more ways that that.
Russia is providing the nuclear reactor and will supply the Uranium. The news today indicates that Russia is suspending work on the reactor. Are they doing it because they are worried about Iran having nuclear weapons? No. They are suspending work because Iran is behind on its $25 million per month payments to the Russian company providing the service.
It seems to me that if Russia, or a Russian company, has interests in the nuclear program of Iran that they would need to recuse themselves from the process at the UN. Russian interests directly benefit from the actions the Russian government takes at the UN. This is beyond belief and is another reason for us not to trust Russia. Israel should be very concerned about this as should any country that Ahmadinejad has targeted in his hate filled speeches.
It is not like the Russians are unaware. Russia asked that all references to the program be removed from the UN sanctions. They are well aware that there is a conflict of interest and their refusal to recuse themselves could have catastrophic consequences for many in the world.

Add to this President’ Bush’s deal with India regarding things nuclear and it is easy to understand, warranted or not, why people get edgy or down right angry about these topics. It just adds to the suspicion and confusion. All major countries involved would better serve their respective citizens by corralling the trouble makers as a group. If Russia, China, the EU, the United States, Britain and others would confront the out of control nations outside the useless UN, it is likely more progress would be made.
Russia is no friend of the West. Especially under Putin. They have made it quite clear without stating it outright that they would like a return to the cold war of the past.
