Black National Anthem Singer Disgraces Denver

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper got a little more than bargained for when he prepared to deliver his State of the City address. A black lady named Rene Marie was asked to sing the National Anthem prior to the address and after she was introduced she began to sing.
What came out of her mouth was not the United States National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner; No, instead she sang a song called “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” which is known as the Black National Anthem. The National Anthem was never sung.
Marie decided to sing that song instead of the one she was asked to sing and instead of asking to do so she kept her plan secret so no one would stop her. There was every expectation that she would sing the National Anthem and people were quite surprised by what she did so it is reasonable to assume this was in no way sanctioned.
Marie explained her act by stating:
“When I decided to sing my version, what was going on in my head was: I want to express how I feel about living in the United States, as a black woman, as a black person,” 9News
Of course, no one asked her to sing a song about how she felt and the meeting was not about her. By doing what she did, she split this country even more. She ignored our Nation’s anthem in favor of one that represents only a portion of our nation and pushed her views, the views of a black woman, on every person present. Imagine what would happen if a white person was asked to sing the National Anthem at the NAACP national meeting (I know, but imagine anyway) and instead sang a song that is viewed as a song about white people. There would be an uproar about it and no one would give a spit about what the singer’s feelings were. We would probably get Sharpton and Jackson ranting on TV.
There is a time and a place for everything and this was not the time or place to sing that song. She knew what she was doing was wrong and she knew it would spark controversy. She was so self centered that she didn’t think about the impact of her actions.
Rene, there is but one America even though people like you and John Edwards try to force this two Americas idea on us. We are one Nation under God and we have but one National Anthem and that anthem is color blind.
I would imagine that people will think twice before inviting her to sing the National Anthem. Imagine if she did this at a baseball or football game…

Big Dog, where is the “Black” nation on the atlas? I can’t seem to find it.
Rene Marie is disgusting, and an insult to America. Stop Obama and his cronies from spitting on American heros and traditions. If this traitor gets elected, America will be ruined!!!
Lee, get over yourself. What does this have to do with Obama? Yeah, it was jacked up. But seriously.
The Denver leaders are partly responsible for this outrage.
Why get a jazz singer to sing the National Anthem in the first place.
I’m disgusted every time I hear the National Anthem murdered at a sports event. Often the audience tries to sing along but gives up amid all of the uh-ooh-uh-ooh notes.
Let’s have some respect and get people who sing it as written and with a sense of pride.
Hey Rene Marie,
There is a plane “leaving this country” every minute, GET ON ONE!
Rene Marie, Your a disgrace to this country. I’m writing the White National Anthem. I hope the black nation doesn’t mind. This crap will never end.
Rene Marie and others like you….if you want a black nation go back to Africa.
Adrock
Open your eyes!! It has everything to do with Obama and the mindset that we will overlook anything and everything as long it’s from the “right” color. Look at what we are willing to look over with Obama!! Anti-White and Anti-America yet folks can’t wait to vote for him.
i was horrified when i heard of this.
The National Anthem is America. I am a black woman and I totally disagree with Ms. Marie’s actions. She was asked to sing one song and decided it to be about her. Racism is not just a white thing, it also a black thing. I feel this is a horrible act for us as a Nation at a time when we are deciding on our next President. For those who brought Obama into the picure, he is both black and white. That is true American.
Correction: The National Anthem is America. I am a black woman and I totally disagree with Ms. Marie’s actions. She was asked to sing one song and decided for it to be about her. Rose, I agree with you. The issue is not the song, I am sure it is a nice song and has a special place but she was asked to sing the National Anthem and decided to do otherwise.
As for Obama, he associates himself as black and that is fine with me. I don’t think he should be our president and his color has nothing to do with it.
Rene, Obama, Michelle – black racists. No difference. When I hear Obama and Michelle speak, I hear ‘we will unite and crush white people’. Rene’s hate is cut from the same cloth as Obama’s and Michelle’s. They hate America because of the fair skinned people who live here, and if they have to destroy this nation to get back at whitey, then that is ok with them. It has EVERYTHING to do with Obama and who and what he represents. Anti-American, anti-democracy, anti-american military, anti-white….
Big Dog, thank you, well said. I appreciate your comments. We will never get over the fact that racism will always exist. I am a black man who has served my country and will again if i’m called back into duty. Although i fill different about the direction our nation has taken, there is someone out there, possibly in there mothers womb that i need to standup and fight for. For that, I will stand as a true American. It doesn’t matter what color of creed. The one thing we have all been given is a choice. We have the right to choose, Heaven or Hell, Freedom or Jail. The choice is ours. That we may all experience peace, love, and unity. GOD BLESS AMERICA LAND THAT I LOVE!!
The words to the song are beautiful, no doubt, but to have a blonde haired black woman sing it to a captive audience, with no advance notice is on the same level as farting in an elevator.
Is she trying to make a statement with her blonde hair?Does she really subconsiously hate being black?Who is she emulating with that? Marilyn Monroe?Madonna?, or perhaps her girlfriend/lover?
Why not leave her hair natural, she would at least appear to be more sincere and honest.
Seems a bit ironic and hypocritical to me.She was hired to do a job, and instead, used the podium for a personal political statement. What if you hired someone to paint your house blue, and it was painted purple instead? Same principal.
The downfall of America began with the Hyphenated America.Native-American, Hispanic-American,Afro-American, Etc-American.Is our country not called the UNITED states of America?Wheree is our unity if we divide ourselves into separatists’ groups.
Gunny (bob?), as you can tell nobody is overlooking this. It’s really caused quite a lot of outrage in our community. So again, nothing to do with Obama. He’s neither anti-white (he’s half white) nor anti-American.
Also, for the record: her hair is gray, not blond.
Love your site. re: Rene Marie..she was wrong. I don’t care how she feels as a black woman in America anymore than she cares how I feel about her. She showed her true colors. (no pun intended)
Unfortunately, this is quite typical of those on the left (I’m just guessing, but want to bet she’s a leftist?) They, and she, are incredibly selfish. They care about no one but themselves, while claiming to only exist for others. It’s a lie, but if they say it enough, they start to believe it, too.
I agree.. there is only one national anthem. And its not a “white national anthem”. I brought this up to a co-worker today who told me she didn’t mind that Rene Marie changed it because she herself couldn’t identify with the lyric. I was saddened. Just because you don’t identify with the lyrics doesn’t mean you can go and substitute the lyrics. I think the younger generation are becoming incredibly selfish. There is only one national anthem and it can not be swapped around based on one’s ethnicity.
Yes there is one anthem, but for those of you, including “BIG DOG” who feel the need to slap BLACK and AFRICA in your one sided responses… you make readers not want to read past the first line. You assume every AFRICAN AMERICAN feels it was OK for her to do what she did… simply not the case. And next time.. please do not address an african american as BLACK.
Betty, I never mentioned Africa and I am NOT going to call her African American. She is black. I don’t hear people like you get all upset when jackasses like Pastor Wright talk about WHITE people. He does not call us European Americans.
I also do not recall saying that she represented all black (yeah I said black) people. I castigated her for what she did.
I promise not to call an African American black if that person happens to be a white African.
Are you upset when they say Obambi could be the first black president?
Betty, it is called reading comprehension. It was ther in black and white…
Betty, are blacks in Africa called African Africans or African Blacks or Black Africans? This PC crap of being offended about everything plus one is ridiculous. I agree with Big Dog “Pastor” (term used lightly) Wright was more insulting to black Americans than any white person could ever be. He would presume to
represent many black Americans who don’t want to have his representation and DO NOT agree with his radical views.
