Burning Koran Is Contrary To What We Stand For; Burning Flag Not?

During a press conference Jake Tapper of ABC asked Barack Obama about the pastor in Florida who was going to burn the Koran (this took place before the decision not to do so). His answer about the pastor was:

With respect to the individual down in Florida, let me just say — well, let me repeat what I said a couple of days ago: The idea that we would burn the sacred texts of someone else’s religion is contrary to what this country stands for. It’s contrary to what this country — this nation was founded on. ABC

Why is it that when a pastor wants to burn a Koran (or a bunch of them) it is contrary to what this country stands for but when someone tries to stop people from burning the American Flag it is a suppression of free speech rights?

Has anyone ever heard some leftist say that burning the American Flag is not what this country stands for? Hell no, they tell you it is a right and all about free speech no matter how distasteful it is.

The same is true for the Korans. I did not agree with burning them but it is the pastor’s right to do so and that is exactly what this country is all about, the freedom to exercise rights even when doing so is distasteful.

The American Flag means more to most Americans than the Koran does so the idea of it being a sacred text is only important to those who think it is sacred.

Bibles get burned all over the world and in many Muslim countries Bibles are confiscated and shredded on the spot and Christian symbols like Crosses are confiscated and destroyed. The items are sacred to Christians but not to the Muslims who confiscate them just as the Koran is sacred only to those who practice Islam.

The American Flag is the symbol of this country and is considered a living entity. And yet the liberals think that burning it is perfectly OK. A commenter here who thinks this Koran burning is wrong (and all about bigoted, Islamophobic people) is a Flag burner.

So while Obama is discussing what is and what is not contrary to what this country stands for, he should probably know what he is talking about before he speaks.

Then again, maybe he was worried about how it would affect the so called religion of peace.

To think, liberals wet their pants whenever some nut job Christian kills an abortion doctor (or performs a very late term abortion depending on how you view it) and paint Christians as radical but dismiss the violent nature of Islam and make excuses for all them.

Obama does not want them to burn his sacred text.

What Country Are We In?

Five students at Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill (California) were sent home on 5 May because they had clothing with the American Flag on it. The students were asked to turn their shirts inside out or remove the clothing and when they said they would not they were told they had to leave and if they tried to attend class they would be suspended. It seems that the Mexican students at the school were upset that the boys would display the American Flag on Cinco de Mayo. The principal told them the Flags offended the Mexican students and that it would be OK to wear them on any other day.

First of all it is appropriate to display the American Flag ANY day and second of all Cinco de Mayo is not a holiday in Mexico except in a few places. The hype over it is a concoction of the American beer companies to give people another reason to celebrate.

I have a problem with the kids wearing the American Flag as clothing because this is a violation of the Flag Code and though I would prefer them to display it properly, I do not think they should have been sent home.

The Mexican students demanded an apology but the five say there is no way that will happen, nor should it.

These students were not the only victims of the anti American sentiment. A student has been suspended because he removed a Mexican Flag that was prominently displayed in his school in Texas and the school is making him pay for the flag. If he did not damage it then why would he have to pay for it? The appropriate Flag to display in an American school is the American Flag. The flag of no other country should get any prominence.

Imagine the uproar that would occur if a Confederate Flag were hung in a school on Robert E Lee’s birthday?

Several students at Vintage High School in Napa California were suspended because they burned a Mexican Flag. There is no indication that the flag was burned on school property but the charred remains of the flag were found in a school trash can. How do they know the kids did not find it and threw it away as a “green” gesture?

If these kids burned an American Flag they would be hailed as heroes for upholding their First Amendment right to burn the thing. Burn a Mexican Flag and you get suspended. This is not the first time this has happened. Several years ago a man was arrested for burning a Mexican Flag.

Do you ever see people get arrested for burning an American Flag? The left wing radicals can gather and burn American Flags (as can any other group) and they are left alone (unless a veteran or two happens to be around) but burn a Mexican Flag and you get in trouble.

When I read these news stories I had to wonder for a moment what country we were in and obviously there are a number of people who have that problem all the time so let me clear it up:

This is the United States of America and there is only one Flag that represents this country and it is the American Flag. You Mexican students who want to fly the Mexican Flag can fly it at your home and if that is not good enough you can go back to Mexico and fly it there. To the school administrators, the only flag that should be flying in a position of prominence at your school is the American Flag and if you prominently display any other you need to get a different job. If you send children home for displaying the American Flag you should be removed from your position.

Those who are opposed to a Mexican Flag being burned, I can sympathize with you because I do not like the American Flag burned but the Supreme Court in this Country has decided that doing so is protected speech. I can promise you that if it is OK to burn an American Flag then is it damn sure OK to burn any other flag.

I have a feeling that the Arizona law and the reaction to it has awakened a bunch of people who are tired of being told how to act with regard to illegal immigration and there will be a lot of action on this issue in the near future.

It might get ugly for illegals and for those who want amnesty for them.

Of course, the illegals could go home and save themselves the trouble.

And the up side to leaving is you can fly your country’s flag all you want.

Burn a Flag, Get Extra Credit

A University of Maine student has dropped a course and filed a complaint because the professor offered extra credit for students who burned an American Flag or the US Constitution (a copy, of course). Rebekah McDade said she has a strong family background of military service and stated the Flag and Constitution are important symbols to her. She decided to drop the class and take it next semester with a different professor. The Professor, Paul Grosswiler, said that he never intended for students to actually burn anything and that hundreds of past students understood that this was designed to spark debate about free speech. This is like Al Sharpton threatening violence and then claiming he never actually meant for people to be violent when one of his supporters kills someone.

Noose

I would not have dropped the class because it would have been too much fun to harass this professor for the entire semester. Imagine how he would react to me referring to him as an idiot or as a liberal twit, all under the guise of free speech. Now I would never burn a Flag or the Constitution (though Congress figuratively burns the Constitution when it passes bills not authorized by the document) but I would participate in the extra credit exercise. I would get to class early and hang a noose up front. Then when the class and Grosswiler arrived and started the wheels of the hate crime machine turning I would say that the noose was mine and that I wanted my extra credit.

You see, Grosswiler has defended his position by claiming that refers to provocative examples to demonstrate the courage necessary to support free expression. He stated that “If they don’t tolerate thought that they hate, they don’t believe in the First Amendment.” I would be there to test the limits of how much he would tolerate. I might wear a swastika or Abortion is Murder shirt or perhaps one that reads “Their symbol is a Jackass, any questions?” just to see if he would be as accepting as he expects others to be.

A spokesman for the University said that Grosswiler’s classroom statements were not meant to be taken seriously and that no one would get extra credit for burning the items in question. So how much of the professor’s classroom comments are not to be taken seriously? Should they just ignore him or are they supposed to decipher when he is serious and when he is not?

All of this is pretty basic liberal double speak. The liberal professor gets taken to task for his words so he decides to say he never really meant it. That did not work for Imus nor has it worked for any conservative who has been accused of the wrong kind of free speech.

I just wonder why this professor felt it necessary to duck the issue. If he truly believes what he says why not exercise his free speech and say so?

Perhaps it is because he knows that words, protected or not, have consequences. Or maybe he lacks the spine to actually defend his position. In any event, this guy is what is wrong with the American educational system.
